Painting & my own work

Portraits, wildlife, dream worlds and plein-air landscapes. Acrylic, oil, watercolour, ballpoint drawing and ceramics: a journey through all my work, from 2009 to today.

About my painting

Painting is silent poetry

I have painted since I was a child. At ten I was already noticing the craquelure of aged paint in museums, the textures and the way the brushstrokes were laid down; I wanted to capture light and shadow in the same way. That obsession with observing is the same one I apply today as a restorer.

My work moves between figurative realism and the dreamlike: portraits with butterflies and birds, wildlife, skies and inner universes. Each painting usually comes with a text of my own, because for me painting and writing speak from the same place.

Would you like a custom painting?

I paint portraits and commissioned works in acrylic or oil, from photographs or from life. Write to me and we can talk about format, technique and timing.

The butterflies of the soul

My fascination goes beyond science and the beauty that emanates from the cellular architecture that clothes our brain, with its harmonious figures and anatomical drawings that Ramón y Cajal would soon capture on paper. His persistence in the search for the purest aesthetics created by mother nature, his artistic gifts and his many-sided curiosity are made to be admired. The need to find a physical reason for thought, those neural connections that he himself soon related to the butterflies of the soul, inspires me. And, metaphorically speaking, Cajal describes them in his neuron theory: “Like the entomologist in search of colourful butterflies, my attention has chased, in the gardens of the grey matter, cells with delicate and elegant shapes, the mysterious butterflies of the soul, whose beating of wings may one day reveal to us the secrets of the mind.”

The flight of imagination

I hear the crowing of an early rooster that mistakes the hospital lights for dawns. The roar of dry leaves rolling along the ground like a motorbike riding its longest miles. Everything feels the same, even louder than usual. The wind, or perhaps the dance of the breeze that is about to arrive with the Sun. I reach the clouds, blurred in the distance, scattering above the city like a translucent sheet. I smell the damp earth about to flood. Is it going to rain in a couple of days? I wonder, while voices are heard far away. I cannot make out the conversation, camouflaged in the swaying and creaking of metal corroded by time. And there I was again, on the swing that rose above the clouds, above invisible flights, beyond the dreams of the night. I was an astronaut in space, a bird in the sky.

The blue room

Blue was the room. It was peace and the order of chaos. Blue were the reflections on her skin. Even the shine of her eyes had turned from that brown, which was sometimes fire under the Sun, into a blue as deep as the waters of the sea. Blue was the shy light peeking through the window, of those sunsets that proclaim across the sky the end of another long day and wait patiently for the silence of the night. The fingers that untangled her hair were outlined in detail, and could spend hours like days at the same rhythm. One night he told her she was blue, as he held her in his warm nest of blankets. He was blue too, more than the sky he had so often dreamed of flying. He was as blue as the feathers on his back, rucksacks of experiences lived and yet to be lived. That instant was of a sublime blue, of an infinite appearance that is born from the finite and reveals its identity without limit. It was a blue that seemed to annihilate time and space, defying the laws of beauty, like the beating of wings or like a wave that rises and fades to return to its original form. That blue was the peak of the mountain, and also of smallness, or even of the nothingness or the void that wander before the vastness of the universe. He was cobalt blue; he carried a world of history with him and yet he was more stable than any other colour. He knew perfectly well where his path lay, and how to walk it. And so they found themselves stretched out before four walls that extended beneath the eyes of a dreamer eager to discover horizons, as infinite as the fluttering of all the birds they had already felt flying in their chests.

The red dress

If I could count all the stars I would know a thousand times over how much you light me up, immense sky in which you sparkle, you shine like the fire that wears down the thorns. When the cold nights threaten with their presence the harshest torments awaken, and you appear out of nowhere, captivating with your essence that guides me along the longest paths. Then you lift me up, towards infinity, towards uncertain directions, there where it smells of every spring like an open flower with the best of its smiles. I walk, I fall, and your hand reaches out at the edge, which without words and only in movements awakens with the joy of a chord, like your voice that dwells in my thoughts. And that is how you bring colour to this world and are reborn little by little from within me, lighting up space from the deepest place while I watch you like the star I love the most.

Dusk in the forest

Landscapes whose brushstrokes speak of an old road, drawing horizons and sunsets painted with wine. Undertow and crevices of the mind, shaping a world without gravity. I had the feeling of walking slowly, an empty body dancing in space. How many days had already passed! I walked perplexed before the harmony of a framed landscape. I headed for a road that seemed to be moving, the sound of my breathing and your voice entwined with the wind. Unison of two songs that reveal secrets, Earth at peace, sweet sighs between tight minutes. I run my fingers through your tangled hair, like the flowers that sparkle in the Sun across the vast meadow.

Rebirth

Morning crept in with a ray of Sun through the window, the kind that burns the skin on a slow fire. The alarm clock rang, unfathomable as a bell, like the tolling of time vibrating in the wind. At the bottom of the cup the future was drawn in thick coffee, like those wings of a thousand birds outlined across the sky. The pressure of the future and the past fell under its own weight, and with it built a new path through the grief. In the marsh of her eyes there were crystal-clear waters; she knew the stones before reaching the plain. Behind her gaze there were immense valleys and hills, lush with hope even for those who lost their minds. Thorns and petals, sweetness and fears. Memories and journeys that surprise with their scents. Opposite directions in a chaotic world, routes that kill and others that soothe. All are welcomes for deserted gardens, new colours for the earthly weariness that blooms in winter.

To you, for the waiting. For the origin of everything. For what you were and will be. For the road you will travel. For the changes, the comings and goings. For your tears, for your smiles. The journey

From union, peace is also born, and rest, and silence. The gliding of a bird above the clouds, the control in its wings, the harmony of its flight. From grey days, a thousand shades, a thousand stories, a thousand drops of water in April. And from each drop, a thousand smiles. Also deserts and droughts, suns that burn, flowers that are born and wither like any living being. From union, not only strength is born. Griefs are born too, wounds that reopen and are stitched with gold, scars that beautify. Devotion, opening up like a book, knowing every last letter of every paragraph. The uncertainty of the next chapter, the journey, the improvisation, the unexpected adventure. Another vision of time is born: sharing, writing the story by hand, drawing it with our fingers. And within it, despair, the fast water that crashes down the waterfalls and escapes the path, the ambition to hold all of it back. From restlessness, light is born, and hope, and projects and dreams to fulfil. And from dreams, feeling alive, human, sleepless nights and journeys into space. Between tears or laughter, feeling the chest open, uncovering the soul.

Black hole in space

Glimpsing the face by the light of the rising Sun, the first chord appears like a deep secret, touch beneath the blankets, beneath the still, warm body. A new day closer to the dream, ever larger, ever tighter. The cry of childhood echoes in my mind, and the swaying in arms that are now my amulet. In the distance, people's routines can be heard, the gentlemanly silence that watches with patience and respect. The pain of uncertainty when there is no scent of new clothes, when the touch of hair cannot be felt. A breath of fresh air in the middle of the restless landscape, calm when everything stops, when you are not absent. When the lips decipher an immense alphabet of words that know emotions, of songs that flow with the current. Since when was getting off the world such a challenge? Bending time and space like a black hole in the vastness, beyond the horizon.

Pandemic times

Behind the window there is an infected city. Lonely, empty streets and silence. There is rain and wind, sorrow and fear in the few wandering gazes still walking the street. The world had come to a complete stop, a historic event sown by humanity itself. The uncertainty of this quarantine and its blurred ending, barely visible in the distance, seems to move further away with every step we take. Grey days for all the souls who have fought this battle to the end, and broken hearts for those they have lost. The news is the reflection of fear and mistrust, also about what the future holds for a prosperity buried once again after overcoming an old crisis and entering a deeper one. These are days of reflection, and also days of self-knowledge. Behind the window, in our new room, we keep painting. Capturing what I want to imagine, where I would like to be, is all I have in my hands. Harvesting in our new bubble great dreams that will one day come true, in small steps. There is still hope that the Sun will shine again, that better times will come; somewhere, sometime.

I should get up in the morning

I should get up in the morning, wake when the Sun keeps me company, when the brightness undeceives and recalls the pain of the migraine after a long night, asking for comfort with a bitter look, when even the back carries the air, and I would, were it not that my clock misleads me and urges me to lose sight of everything, to forget forgetting without leaving me a single clue. Perhaps the tide threatens, perhaps the sea now embraces me, and perhaps tomorrow I will drown in its shell of swell, of empty words, like this heart that used to laugh but ended up mad and withered, drawing words on paper with graphite. Because there are no ears left for those who make wishes to the Moon, for those who live without fortune.

Land of tigers

Little more than a hundred years have passed, and we watch with the expectant eyes of wandering tigers. Films that did not exist at the time and that remained in the living memory of a society in decline. Land of tigers and more tigers. And history is still active; senseless struggles keep beating. Destructive zeal, competitive zeal, withered flowers and skies without light. War and more war, repertoires of anger, of pride, of fire, and... of emptiness. Torments in the troubled minds that flood the world and drown its hopes. How much it has rained and how much it keeps raining. How many footprints remain on the bombed ground, in the hearts of the souls who once dreamed of conquering the world.

When the rhythm of the door ceased

When the rhythm of the door ceased, a cry of deep silence spilled in echoes over infinite walls. A cry capable of deafening the wind that roams free across the sky, there where no obstacle can reach it. And there I was, wandering, before a new scene in which nothing responded to my senses any more. Perhaps they, vanished from the physical world, only left a trace in my mind: an ownerless footprint advancing by pure memory, driven by instinct. Now, a vibrant sun would burn me inside forever, trapped in a restless sky whose clouds blaze with every question that is reborn.

Remember yourself

Remember yourself before the journey, before the day you lost your suitcases. The tide dragged you away when you least expected it, and here you are, impatient again. Look at yourself carefully, remember yourself. Before the seconds became hours in a raging sea, remember yourself floating to the shore. Draw your face in the sand and stop, savour the time that slips away slowly, almost imperceptibly. Go back and remember yourself.
